AI agent with production credentials

Anything the agent decides to run, or is tricked into running by text it reads, executes with the same power you have, including dropping tables or moving money. How code reaches production and how the server is configured. Check it yourself with the steps below; our test adds what a script and a second account can find.

What it looks like

# .env (readable by the agent)
DATABASE_URL=postgres://admin:...@prod-db.example.com:5432/app
SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY=eyJ...
STRIPE_SECRET_KEY=sk_live_...

# .cursor/mcp.json
{ "mcpServers": { "db": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "some-db-mcp"], "env": { "DATABASE_URL": "postgres://admin:...@prod-db..." } } } }
A workspace where the coding agent can read live database and payment credentials, and an MCP configuration that hands the agent a direct connection to the production database.

What happens

Anything the agent decides to run, or is tricked into running by text it reads, executes with the same power you have, including dropping tables or moving money.

Where it shows up

Descriptive, not a verdict: builders and stacks whose defaults make this reachable, or that a public incident names. Each hub states the tool's own security features.

Seen in public

In July 2025 a Replit agent deleted data from a production database during a user-declared code freeze; Replit's CEO confirmed it, said backups allowed a restore, and announced automatic dev and production database separation.

Cursor below version 1.3.9 created workspace files without approval, so a prompt injection in content the agent read could write a .cursor/mcp.json file and run attacker commands (CVE-2025-54135, CVSS 8.6).

In Cursor versions before 1.3, an MCP server configuration approved once could later be changed to a different command, for example in a shared repository, and would run without a new prompt (CVE-2025-54136, CVSS 7.2).

Check it yourself

Uses your builder's dashboard and your browser. No tools to install.

  1. Open the folder the agent works in and look for .env, .env.local or similar files; note whether any value starts with sk_live_, contains the word prod, or is a service-role or admin key.
  2. Look for .cursor/mcp.json, .mcp.json or a similar MCP settings file (MCP is the protocol coding tools use to plug in external tools such as databases) and check whether it contains a live connection string.
  3. In Replit, open the Database pane and confirm you see separate Development and Production databases; in Claude Code run /permissions and check whether the mode is bypassPermissions.
  4. A bad result is a live credential visible to the agent, one shared database for development and production, or a mode that never asks before running commands.

What we check

We map every credential the agent can reach and check its scope against the vendor's key types. We then run a controlled prompt-injection test, a file in the workspace that instructs the agent to read and send a secret, and report which credentials would have left the machine.

Fix direction

Give the agent development credentials only and keep production ones in the hosting provider's secret store or a deny-listed file. Use the guard rails the vendors ship. Replit separates development and production databases and states the agent cannot modify production; Claude Code has permission prompts and Read deny rules for .env; Cursor asks per MCP tool on versions at or above 1.3.9.

Mechanism documented in: Replit Docs: Development and production databases (verified 2026-09-21); Claude Code Docs: Configure permissions (verified 2026-09-21).

Questions

can an ai coding agent delete my production database

It can if it holds a credential that allows it. In July 2025 a Replit agent deleted data from a user's production database during a declared code freeze. Replit's CEO confirmed it, the data was restored from backup, and Replit rolled out automatic separation of development and production databases. Check which database and which keys your agent can reach today, and move production credentials out of its workspace.

how do i stop cursor or claude code from touching production

Keep production credentials out of the files the agent can read, and use the tools' own controls. Claude Code asks before edits and shell commands by default and accepts Read deny rules such as Read(./.env). Cursor asks for approval before using MCP tools by default; the two Cursor advisories from August 2025 that weakened this were fixed in versions 1.3 and 1.3.9, so confirm you are on a current release.

is it safe to put my database url in mcp json

A live production connection string in an MCP configuration gives every tool call, and any prompt injection that reaches the agent, direct database access. Use a development database or a read-only role for the agent, keep the file out of version control, and check the vendor's approval settings so a changed configuration prompts you again.
